BERNICE LILLIAN AALGAARD

November 7, 1919 — October 18, 2013

Bernice Lillian (Fliflet) Aalgaard Bernice Fliflet Aalgaard was born November 7, 1919 in Hannaford, ND. She was the daughter of Gustav and Clara (Kaashagen) Fliflet. She attended school in Hannaford and graduated from high school in 1938. During Bernice’s years of school, she played basketball and was captain of her basketball team; she was also active in track, as she could really run and jump and brought home many blue ribbons. Bernice was baptized and confirmed as a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Bernice asked Jesus Christ to be her savior when she was 14 years old. She taught Sunday School, was active in Altar Guild, a member of Abigail Circle and the Church Choir. Bernice married Algot Aalgaard on August 23, 1942. She spent several months in Eugene, Oregon where she worked at the cannery while Algot was stationed at Camp White, Oregon and was on military maneuvers’. When Al was sent overseas to the South Pacific shore, Bernice returned to Hannaford and stayed with her parents; where she worked for Doctor Hoffman as his dental assistant. When Algot was discharged from the army in October of 1945 he returned to Hannaford where they made their home. Bernice worked as school hot lunch cook for the Hannaford Public School district for 23 years. During that time Bernice and Al became members of the Friendly Fun Makers senior citizens club and served as secretary/treasurer for the organization, retiring from the office of treasurer at the age of 92 years old. Bernice loved cooking, baking, canning, embroidering, crocheting, playing cards, bingo and yahtzee. Her home was always open and welcoming to visitors, the coffee pot was put on and her homemade baking was served and many wonderful times were shared with conversation and laughter around her kitchen table. Bernice had a loving and joyful personality and she will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Bernice passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 in the Griggs County Care Center where she had been a resident for a short time. Bernice is survived by her sister Evelyn Fliflet, Cooperstown, ND, daughters, Claire Anne (Gary) Swenson of Valley City, ND, Ginger (Don) Oelrich of Sabin, MN and son Gerald (Jessica) Aalgaard of Dickson, TN. Grandchildren, Lonnie (Becky) Swenson, Valley City, ND, Dan (Jessica) Swenson, Mandan, ND, Brady (Jill) Swenson, West Fargo, ND, Kristie Jo (Lance) LeRoux, Johnstown, CO, Shelli Anderson (Kirby Berg), Luverne, ND, Kendra (Brandon) Anderson, Lawrenceburg, TN and Seth (Cynthia) Aalgaard, Dickson, TN. Great grandchildren, Joseph, Joshua, Jessica, Jenna Leigh, Brody, Luka, Ziggidy, Skylah, Gavin, Kylee, Zachary, Talia, Drew, Tanna, Bayley, Khloe and Ashton. Great great twin grandsons, Attikus and Kaius. Sister-in-law, Vera Aalgaard, Sacramento, CA. and numerous nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by her loving husband Al, her father Gustav, mother Clara, brothers Lawrence, Sam (Selmer), Ruskie (Oscar), Pummy (Palmer) and sister Laura (Clarence) Stromme. Funeral service will be Saturday, October 26th at 2:00pm, Faith Lutheran Church, Hannaford, ND. Visitation will be Friday, October 25th from 5-7pm and Prayer Service at 7:00pm, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Chapel, Cooperstown, ND. Interment will be at Faith Lutheran Cemetery.
