Birdie Schoenwald Haugen

BIRDIE SCHOENWALD HAUGEN Memorial Services will be held at 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the Union Lutheran Church, rural Hannaford, ND. Bertha was born on December 5, 1921 in Willis Township near Minot, N.D., the daughter of Pauline (Mautz) and Jacob Buechler. She was raised by her grandmother, Sophia Mautz, attended rural schools near Garrison, N.D. and graduated from Minot High School in 1940. She attended business college in Minot. On December 24, 1942 she married Robert L. Schoenwald in a military chapel at Randolph Field near San Antonio, Texas. She lived in Minot from 1944 to 1982 where she raised her three children and owned and operated the Little Red Caboose with her husband, Bob. In 1983 she and Bob retired to their home at Lake Audubon. Bob passed away on July 21, 1985. She cared for her aunt, Emilia S. Mautz, from 1989 until Emilia’s death in 1995. On September 18, 1998 she married Eldren O. Haugen of Hannaford, N.D. in a service at Union Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Cooperstown, N.D. and spent winters in Mesa, Arizona. Birdie died on May 3, 2010 at Cooperstown Medical Center. She is survived by her children, Robert Schoenwald II of Middleton, WI and Carolyn (Michael) Auen of Savannah, GA.; four grandchildren, Karen Paurus, Minneapolis, MN, Robert (Cindy) Ohly of Cottage Grove, WI, Chad (Michelle) Ohly, Fitchburg, Wi., and Stephanie Auen, Eugene, OR; niece, Paulette Zeitz of Velva, ND; step brother, Norman (Janice) Stark of Rapid City, SD; as well as her beloved Haugen step children, Eldo (Connie) Haugen of Hannaford, ND, Ronald (Diane) Haugen, Dazey, ND, Jeanne (Duane) Morrison, Robinson, ND, Karen (Tim) Nelson of Plattsmouth, NE, Kathleen (Scott) Helmer of Hannaford, ND and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, daughter Kathleen, brother Carl and husband, Eldren Haugen. Memorial Services will be held at 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the Union Lutheran Church, rural Hannaford, ND.
