HANNAFORD

ELGAR J. PAULSEN

Elgar Paulsen, 95, of Hannaford, ND, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.

Elgar was born May 4, 1929, to Jens and Mary Paulsen in Finley, ND.  He attended school and grew up in Finley.  After completing his education, he served his country by joining the Marine Corps.

He married Ernestine (Grady) Petersen on December 27, 1958, at which time he gained his son, Scott.  They moved to Hannaford, ND, and spent the rest of their lives in the Hannaford area.  Elgar was a jack of all trades and held several different positions in his working career.  He was a farmer, rancher, elevator worker, construction worker and mechanic.  The bricks used to build the Hannaford bowling alley were all made by Elgar.  He spent a good share of his life the owner-operator of the Standard Oil
Service Station, until his retirement.

Even after retirement, Elgar continued to stay busy.  His hobbies included rock collecting, jewelry making, carpentry, and when he got the chance, he would do a little farming.  Dave Johnson would occasionally ask Elgar to help with spring or fall farm work.  Elgar frequently spoke about how much he enjoyed this, and always looked forward for the chance to work with Dave.

Perhaps his greatest joy was the chance to visit with family.  He will always be remembered for his work ethic, sense of humor, his pleasant demeaner, and willingness to help others.

Elgar is survived by his son Scott (Dorry), 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ernestine, his parents, 6 brothers, and 6 sisters.
