MILDRED RISLOV

Mildred Rislov passed away peacefully at the age of 96 years, 7 months, and 9 days at her home in the Warroad Senior Living Center of Warroad, Minnesota on April 4, 2024.

Mildred Arlene Schwinger was born August 26, 1927 to Leland and Anna Marie (Holten) Schwinger in Watertown, SD.

Mildred attended a country grade school and later graduated from Florence High School, Florence, SD in 1944. Upon graduation, she worked at the Auditor’s Office in the courthouse in Watertown.

On December 12, 1946 she married the love of her life, Wallace (Wally) Rislov, at the Bergen Church near Florence. They lived in Watertown, SD, for 5 years, where their children, Larry, Mark and Kay were born. Then in 1951, they moved to Huffton, SD, when Wally accepted a position with Cargill, Inc. It was there that their fourth child, Dave, was born. They lived in Huffton for 10 years and then moved to Shepard, ND, in 1961 to run the country elevator.

Mildred worked part time in retail at the Johnson Store in Cooperstown and also worked in the kitchen at the Griggs County Hospital. Mildred was then hired by the Cooperstown school and worked faithfully for 19 years serving as a cook to all ages of the Cooperstown School District. In 1986 Mildred was nominated for the School Food Service Member of the Year. It was at this time that her love for children from all walks of life could shine. She had many wonderful stories about the kids she served and plenty of the conversations that took place.

It was in Shepard where Mildred and Wally enjoyed the simple pleasures of country living. They watched their four children grow, they welcomed friends and neighbors and slowly watched as the family expanded and grandchildren came to love Shepherd as well.

Upon Wally’s retirement from Shepard in 1990, they moved into Cooperstown. In 2013, Mildred’s greatest love, Wally, passed away. She continued to live in their home until 2017 when she moved to the Warroad Senior Living Center, living independently, until 4 days before her passing.

Mildred had the deepest love for all her family and friends. But the grandkids tipped the scale of love and adoration. She treasured each and every one of them and loved when they would come to visit.

Mildred was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She loved to fish with Wally and attended many of his horseshoe tournaments. Mildred was an avid Minnesota Twins fan all of her life. She was known in her later years as the Puzzle Princess for her love of puzzling. Mildred lived a life that emphasized to “always be kind.”

She is survived by her daughter, Kay (Edward) Arnesen, son, Dave (Connie) Rislov, daughters-in law, Karla Rislov, Vickie Rislov, 10 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren, She is also survived by sisters, Inez Chandler, Janet (Burt) Drake, and sister-in-law Shirley Schwinger and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Leland and Anna Marie, husband Wally, two sons, Larry and Mark, brother Kenneth Schwinger, brother-in-law Kenneth Chandler and an infant grandson, Thomas Rislov.
